| Computer software programs are pieces of code written by programmers to help computer users accomplish a certain task on their computer. At their core, the operating systems are nothing more than software programs that allow us to use the computers. Other examples of software are Microsoft Word for word processing, Nero for burning CDs, Firefox for browsing the web, and Microsoft Outlook for sending and receiving email messages. Computers can do anything they are programmed to do and it is the software that runs these programs.
To work properly, a computer software program must run on the operating system, or platform, it was written for. PC computer software will not run on a Mac computer or vice versa. Likewise, a software application written for a Linux operating system does not run on a PC with the Microsoft Windows operating system. Strangely enough, there are emulator software programs that can run certain programs across platforms.
There are all sorts of different computer software programs on the market. Productivity software allows users to work efficiently. Productivity software can be an office suite, tax software, or anything else that gets our work done. Computer security software helps protect computers from viruses and other malware. Security software, like anti virus software, anti spam software, or firewalls are quite common on computer systems nowadays. Educational software helps children, and adults, learn specific topics or course material. There are thousands of educational software companies to help with SATs, GREs, or simply to teach a user how to use another software package. The last genre of computer software is entertainment software. Video games are a part of most computer users lives since childhood. Entire computer systems are built to bring out the very best features in video games. Other forms of entertainment software are the multimedia packages that allow us to listen to music or watch movies on our computers.
When looking to buy computer software, a person needs not look any further than the local electronics store. Large supercenter stores sell volumes of software as well. This is great because any program is just a short drive away.
Many people opt to buy their computer software online. Online pricing is generally cheaper than the stores and you are almost assured that you will find the software you are looking for somewhere on the Internet. The problem with Internet shopping compared to the store was that you used to have to wait for the package to be shipped to you. The shipping process could take weeks before the program arrived at your door.
Since the advent of high speed Internet access, computer software can be downloaded from the manufacturers’ servers giving the same instant gratification that buying software in the store provides. Better still, when downloading software, there is no need to get in the car.
Another great thing about having software online is that many companies offer trial versions of the software. A trial version usually lasts a certain length of time, like 30 days, or is not completely functional. Trial versions allow users to test drive the software before making a purchase. The customer can base their purchase on their own opinions rather than someone else’s review.

| Due to the complexity of the tax laws in the United States, the market for income tax software, or tax return software, has boomed since computers have made their way into many American homes. Income tax software is updated every year to reflect changes in the tax code so 2006 tax software is not recommended to be used in place of 2007 tax software. Since the laws are different, and the companies want continuous sales, many tax return software packages will not work after the year they are written for. Users can open up previous year documents, and amend past tax returns, however entering data that comes from new w-2 forms or other tax information may be locked out.
