Due to the complexity of the tax laws in the United States, the market for income tax software, or tax return software, has boomed since computers have made their way into many American homes. Income tax software is updated every year to reflect changes in the tax code so 2006 tax software is not recommended to be used in place of 2007 tax software. Since the laws are different, and the companies want continuous sales, many tax return software packages will not work after the year they are written for. Users can open up previous year documents, and amend past tax returns, however entering data that comes from new w-2 forms or other tax information may be locked out.

Most tax software works for simple 1040 tax form users. The income tax software acquires the basic information from the user regarding name, social security number, marital status, dependents, and so on. For users who buy tax software from the same company year after year, some of this information will transfer over to the new return and ask the preparer if all the information from the last tax return is still correct saving a great deal of time to the preparer. For businesses, accounting tax software packages are a better bet as they offer more functionality for business taxes.

The income tax return software will then ask the preparer a series of questions. The software then moves into gathering data regarding income. Certain software packages will ask for the employer ID, which is found on the W-2 form. From this information, the software can connect to the server and download all of the W-2 information based on the employer ID and the preparer’s social security number. This saves time and prevents mistakes. Not all companies have their information available for the tax preparation software. If nothing is found, the software asks the user to enter the information manually. When filling out the income portion, if the software senses a mistake, it will flag this as well and warn the user before moving on. As information is entered, most tax software will list the amount due, or the amount of the refund. This number is updated every time new information is entered into the program.

Tax return software programs also allow the user to enter deductions. Generally, the deductions on the basic software are not as fine tuned. If the person wants to itemize deductions, they may have to upgrade to a special package or purchase an add on piece of software for this purpose.

When the return is complete, the preparer can electronically sign the document and then e-file their return. The e-file requires no papers to be sent and usually results in a quicker refund period if the preparer gives their bank information for an electronic funds transfer.

Tax return software can be purchased about everywhere software is sold. There are also free tax software packages available however, they may not have the functionality that a commercial software package has. Also, if you are looking at a free tax software option, make sure that the tax laws are current. There is usually an additional fee to e-file your taxes as well, even with the free software.
